What Our Media Says About Us

TIME Magazine is one of the most respected Media outlets in the US. So why is it altering the cover stories for it's US market? Here is the cover for the 5 December 2011 issue. Notice that the European, Asian & South Pacific issues all have a common cover story - only the US edition is altered. Interesting to know that TIME has a different cover for US consumption than the rest of the world. Not for the first time, but definitely one of the most enlightening disconnects. Here is the cover from the 8 August 2011 issue, where "Travels Through Islam" is the cover story - everywhere but in the US, where "ISLAM" is a bad word in much of the country. It says a lot about the quality of conversation in our country - that discourse on world events is not only discouraged, but that our Media actively restricts access to the information that we need to have a healthy discussion - on any topic. Is Russia the new Zimbabwe?

The newest attack on the lives of homosexual men and women is not in a Third World nation, an unenlightened educational backwater where local superstitions supercede science. No, it is in Russia, a culturally, scientifically, and intellectually rich nation. Moscow is now proposing legislation that would bad the "promotion" of a gay lifestyle, UK Gay News reports: The move comes less than 48 hours after the legislature in Russia’s ‘second city’, St. Petersburg, passed the first of three readings by a 27-1 (with one abstention) margin of their measure, ‘The Promotion of Homosexuality, Lesbianism, and Transgenderism to Minors. "Yes, we plan to adoption of this law in Moscow and now [are] just working on its development,” chairman of the Moscow City Council Committee on Health Care and Public Health, Lyudmila Stebenkova told the newspaper, adding that the committee “commends the Legislative Assembly of St. Petersburg”.
